17 May 2022 – Associate Professor John Loadsman on Research Fraud

In this era of Covid 19, whilst we have all been encouraged to “follow the science”, it might come as a surprise to some that fraudulent research publications exist in considerable numbers.  John Loadsman is a full-time staff anaesthetist at Royal Price Alfred Hospital in Sydney and holds an appointment as a Conjoint Associate Professor of Anaesthesia at Sydney University.  As Editor in Chief of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care he estimates that he receives multiple fraudulent research papers each week for consideration of publication.  He has been called a sleuth for his exposure of some researchers who have had well over 100 scientific papers retracted from the published literature for being proven to be fraudulent.  In his presentation, Professor Loadsman will be discussing the phenomenon of fraudulent research, the various ways of uncovering fraud, as well as the various challenges he faces as an editor having to confront this growing problem.
