Auckland Medico-Legal Society
Welcome to the Auckland Medico-Legal Society
The aim of the Auckland Medico-Legal Society is the promotion of medico legal knowledge in all its aspects.
It is open to qualified members of the legal and medical professions, and such other persons as may be interested in medico legal work.
The Auckland Medico-Legal Society was formed in 1953 by a group of doctors and lawyers who recognised the need for a neutral setting which promoted free and frank communication between professions. Our founders saw the Society’s role as providing medico-legal education in a convivial and positive setting. This was during the time when there still existed in New Zealand the right to sue in medical negligence. However, even after the Accident Compensation legislation was passed in the mid 1970’s, the advantages of maintaining close contact between the professions was recognised and the Society continued to flourish. It counts amongst it past presidents and members leaders in both professions and today has a membership of approximately 345.
The Society meets six times a year between March and November.
